Titanic Foundation, has today launched a new summer exhibition Out of Stores: Explore Our Shipyard Collection within Titanic Belfast’s Andrews Gallery.

The free exhibition, which will run from the 2nd to 31st August, has opened up Titanic Foundation’s extensive archives to showcase a selection of never-seen-before items, from caulker’s tools to tracing linen, an extra-large industrial sewing machine and a Thompson works theodolite, which would have been used in the Shipyard Fitting Departments in the shipyard. Visitors will be able to learn more about how the men of Belfast built these world-class ships and how Belfast’s shipbuilding legacy was born.

Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Titanic Foundation, said:

“Through our heritage projects, including the restoration of the former Harland & Wolff Drawing Offices, now Titanic Hotel Belfast, and the SS Nomadic, as well as our work with former employees and their families, we acquired a significant collection of artefacts from the shipyard. We are delighted to be able to pull together this exhibition to give a real flavour of what it was like to work in the yard. The exhibition is open to the general public and we will also be encouraging the local community, including people with connections to the shipyard, to come along and tell their stories, helping us bring these artefacts back to life”

Titanic Belfast Chief Executive, Judith Owens, commented,

“We are pleased to host Titanic Foundation’s Out of Stores: Shipyard Collection within our Andrews Gallery this summer. The free added-value event is the perfect opportunity for locals and international visitors to delve deeper and learn more about not only the Shipyard but the people and how they built these world-famous ships through a collection of never-seen-before artefacts for a limited time only.”

The Exhibition also includes artefacts from the National Museums NI and Belfast Harbour Commissioners who have kindly loaned items from their stores to add to this one-off display.

Titanic Foundation are encouraging local people to call in and view the exhibition alongside the many international visitors that will be in Belfast during the summer.
