Sammy Douglas has been involved in Community Regeneration and Economic Development since the 1970s. From 1995 to 2008 he was a part-time adviser to the International Fund for Ireland working on community economic development projects in disadvantaged areas of Belfast.
Sammy is a founding member of East Belfast Interface Group working to address community conflict and encourage reconciliation. He is a former founding Chairman of East Belfast Partnership, Castlereagh Business Start Programme, Harland and Wolff Task Force and a former community member of Laganside Development Corporation. He was awarded an MBE in November 2002 by Her Majesty the Queen for services to the community in Belfast.
He is the Project Champion for the Connswater Community Greenway, a £40 million flagship regeneration project in the East of the city. From 2008 to 2010 Sammy was Community Advisor to Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson. Sammy was elected as an MLA to the Northern Ireland Assembly in May 2011.
